Voyages to Antiquity calls it a day as ship troubles take their toll

The problems with Aegean Odyssey that led to the cancellation of a large part of this year's summer programme have taken their toll with the announcement that Voyages to Antiquity is to cease operations at the end of October.

The line’s remaining three cruises of the season up to its final 3 October sailing will go ahead as planned.

Engine problems caused Aegean Odyssey to miss ten cruises

Voyages to Antiquity was forced to cancel 10 cruises on Aegean Odyssey, its only ship, due to an engine failure in April. It came after a record surge in bookings for 2019 due to an increased Scadinavian programme and a series of major industry awards.

The engines of the 47-year-old ship, which can carry up to 12,100 passengers, have been fully repaired ahead of it being chartered to American education travel tour operator Road Scholar from April 2020 for a three-year period.

Voyages to Antiquity managing director Jos Dewing said in a letter to partners: “The executive management has been looking at various alternative options to continue the company. However, this process was severely impacted by the unforeseeable engine failure that occurred in April this year, forcing the company to cancel most of our remaining 2019 summer cruises.

“While we are pleased to advise that the ship has now been fully repaired and that the final cruises of the 2019 season will go ahead as scheduled, this serious issue has had an impact on the future plans for Voyages to Antiquity and repairing the ship has been the absolute priority for management and the focus of the company during this difficult period.

“It is therefore with regret that we have taken the difficult decision to close Voyages to Antiquity at the end of October 2019, at which point our office in Oxford will also close.”
