A new teeth-chattering adventure will soon be available for guests on Le Commandant Charcot as Ponant creates ever more immersive, exclusive and meaningful experiences.
Five Polar Raids will set out across sea ice into the snowy mountains of East Greenland during two extraordinary cruises in 2023 and 2024 that will be a true test of endurance.
A full-scale dry run was held during an expedition towards the East coast of Greenland in May to test the unique challenge that lasts three days and two nights, unassisted, far from everything, out on the sea ice.
The expedition was led by Polar expert Nicolas Dubreuil and Greenlandic guide and ice expert Ole Eliassen, along with seven other team members including professional mountain guides, a medical doctor and brave Ponant staff.
The group left their luxury icebreaker to trek across the sea ice into the snowy mountains of Ittoqqortoormiit and camp for two nights in the pristine arctic nature of East Greenland.
Moving around on skis, each team member had to pull their own sled (pulk), carrying all the materials and food supplies, enough to cover each adventurers’ individual needs for several days.
Le Commandant Charcot will be offering five Polar Raids on two Arctic cruises in 2023 and 2024
Once the camp was all set, everyone took it in turns to keep watch. Such a mission will be in store for those passengers who who choose to participate.
The Polar Raid experience will be an option for a limited number of guests on five polar expeditions – two in 2023 and three in 2024 – to meet the Inuit communities established along Greenland’s Eastern coast.
The 11-day Inuit spring of Ammassalik cruises featuring Polar Raids are
- 5 to 15 May 2023, from £16,540
- 16 April to 6 May 2024, from £13,360
