AIDAnova keel laying marks start of Carnival’s green fleet

Carnival Corporation has kicked off construction of the first of its green fleet of seven ships that will be fully-powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the keel-laying of AIDAnova at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany yesterday (6 September).

The seven ships will be delivered by 2022, with AIDAnova leading the way in autumn 2018.

They will be the first in the cruise industry that can use LNG to generate 100 per cent of their power both in port and on the open sea, reducing exhaust emissions to help protect the environment and support Carnival Corporation’s aggressive sustainability goals.

“Today marked a significant milestone in the construction of this next-generation of Carnival Corporation ships featuring our ‘green cruising’ design, which will be the most environmentally friendly ships in our company’s history,” said Arnold Donald, the Carnival Corporation’s CEO.

“We are proud to be on the forefront of advancing LNG and look forward to the delivery of these beautiful and innovative ships that will help us meet our top goal – to provide extraordinary vacation experiences for our guests that exceed all of their expectations.”

Following the introduction of AIDAnova in 2018, new ships are earmarked for Costa Cruises in 2019, Carnival Cruise Line and P&O Cruises in 2020, Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises in 2021 and Carnival Cruise Line in 2022.
