Wonder woman! Sophia Loren christens MSC Meraviglia
In its traditional manner, MSC Cruises entrusted the christening of its new wonder ship, MSC Meraviglia, to the Hollywood screen legend Sophia Loren in Le Havre on 3 June, 2017. At 171,598 tons and with guest capacity of 5,714, MSC Meraviglia is the biggest ship to be built by a European ship owner, and also the biggest ship to come into service in 2017. www.msccruises.co.uk
Hanseatic Nature keeps with tradition
The next construction stage of Hanseatic Nature, the first of two expedition new-builds, has begun with the keel laying at the Vard shipyard in Tulcea, Romania. A coin was welded into the block in a ship-building tradition that is believed to bring luck to new ships. The christening and maiden voyage are planned for April 2019. www.hl-cruises.com
Basketball superstar Yao Ming to christen Majestic Princess
Chinese basketball stars Yao Ming (left) and his wife Ye Li will officially name the new Majestic Princess in Shanghai on 9 July at a gala event. Yao Ming is a global ambassador of basketball, an 8-time NBA All-Star, and most recently an inductee into the NBA Hall of Fame. www.princess.com
