Ponant’s ground-breaking new polar expedition vessel is to be named Le Commandant Charcot in recognition of the early 20th century explorer known as “the gentleman of the poles”.
The world first hybrid electric icebreaker, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), will bear the name of a great French explorer, Captain Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who crossed the Arctic Circle and travelled to the Arctic for the first time in 1902.

Bookings for cruises aboard Le Commandant Charcot will open on 4 April, 2019, but pre-bookings can already be made to secure a stateroom and an early bird price.
Guest will have the opportunity to discover the Geographic North Pole (latitude 90 degrees North) or parts of Antarctica, such as the Ross Sea, Charcot Island and Peter Island, which were previously inaccessible.
Ponant chose Vard, Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’ s Norwegian subsidiary, to build the vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in 2021.
