All 50 ships across the Royal Caribbean Cruises fleet will sail into 2019 without a plastic straw in sight.
Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, TUI Cruises and Pullmantur Cruceros are ditching the straws as part of a comprehensive plastics elimination programme.
Plastic straws will be ditched from RCCL ships by the end of the year
Over the past year, RCL ships have been introducing a “straws upon request” policy. But from the start of 2019 guests requesting a straw will be given paper ones instead of plastic.
Guests will also find Forrest Stewardship Council-certified wood coffee stirrers and bamboo garnish picks as part of RCL’s plastic reduction strategy.
“Healthy oceans are vital to the success of our company,” said Richard Fain, chairman of RCCL. “For over 25 years, our Save the Waves programme has guided us to reduce, reuse, and recycle everything we can. Eliminating single-use plastics is another step in that programme.”
After straws, stirrers and picks, the company’s next efforts will focus on other single-use plastics such as condiment packets, cups, and bags. A full plastics audit is underway, with the overall plan to be completed in phases by 2020.
