Following the end of the quarantine period on Diamond Princess, guests who tested negative for the coronavirus were finally leaving the ship today, and Princess Cruises confirmed Canada, Australia and Hong Kong were immediately flying their citizens home from Japan.
But the respective embassies told them they face an additional 14 days of quarantine in their countries of origin before being given final clearance.
The 74 British nationals on the ship have been told by the Foreign Office to remain on board and wait while evacuation flights are being arranged.
Of the 3,700 guests on board Diamond Princess, which has been quarantined in Yokohama since 3 February following the discovery of the outbreak, 621 passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess were infected by the virus.
Individuals not taking government repatriation flights also began to leave the ship today.
Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises president, returned to Japan with members of her support team to help prepare for today’s disembarkation of guests and crew.
Working in coordination with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Princess Cruises is monitoring the progress and offering guests travel assistance once heath certificates have been delivered by Japanese health authorities.
