American Cruise Lines is offering guests with new and existing bookings for cruises departing between 9 March and 30 June the ability to cancel for any reason up to 24 hours prior to sailing due to the “serious and challenging” coronavirus situation.
Those who choose to cancel will receive cruise vouchers for the full amount paid, including additional tours, hotel nights or transportation service purchased directly through the company.
SeaView editor David Simpson, who is scheduled to sail on ACL’s American Star, top of page, departing Jacksonville, Florida, on 18 April, has received a personal letter from the company’s CEO, Charles Robertson, who describes the global coronavirus outbreak as “serious and challenging”.
In his letter, Mr Robertson explains:
“I write candidly regarding all that you are likely hearing about the travel industry, given the spread of COVID-19. This is a serious and challenging situation, but American Cruise Lines’ cruising season is off to a successful start. All of our cruises this year have run as scheduled.
“I have been on board for several recent cruises and have appreciated the support and feedback of our guests. They seem to have identified an important distinction between international travel and the experience we provide on small ships visiting small towns exclusively in the USA.
“Personally, I believe strongly in this distinction, but I also believe that we have a duty to provide you with the flexibility to make your own decision.
“There are several factors that have helped other guests make the decision to keep their upcoming cruise with us. These include:
- We are 100% American – an American company with American ships and an American crew
- We do not visit any international ports
- We are always in sight of land and have rapid access to facilities ashore
- We have lower guest capacities aboard our small ships
- We are denying boarding to people that have recently been to the identified high risk areas
- We have adopted pre-screening measures and rigorous shipboard sanitation techniques
“We are planning to operate your cruise and we would love to show you this part of our great country; however, if you feel it is necessary to change your cruise, you are welcome to contact our customer service department.
“I am working to speak directly with as many guests as possible to express my gratitude for your patience and support. Your safety, along with the safety of all our guests and crew is our top priority.”
