It has been a year in the planning but today the secret was out as Seabourn announced a “groundbreaking” move into expedition market with two 23,000-ton ships.
The line has signed a letter of intent with shipbuilders T.Mariotti and Damen for two luxury expedition vessels, with the first arriving in June 2021 and the second 11 months later.
Both 264-passenger capacity ships will have two submarines on board as well as the usual arrange of kayaks and Zodiac inflatable boats. as it explores the Arctic and Antarctica.
The vessels will add new capacity for Seabourn in Antarctica, the Arctic and other destinations around the world.
Richard Meadows, Seabourn’s president, said called the announcement “groundbreaking”. “The combination of immersive experience, fine accommodations and sumptuous amenities offered by these new ships builds on the success of our current product and further demonstrates our leadership as innovator,” he added.
The first ship will sail in the Arctic in late summer 2021 before sailing itineraries in Antarctica the following winter.
Robin West, Seabourn’s vice president of expedition operations and planning, revealed that the line had decided on developing its expedition concept a year ago.
