Take a life-changing journey to the most remote, and coldest, continent on Earth

If there is one thing you need when taking a cruise to Antarctica it’s stamina.

First off you’ll have withstand the long-haul  flight from the UK to Argentina to begin your adventure, more often than not in Ushuaia but sometimes from Tierra del Fuego, and even Port Stanley in the Falklands.

Then you may have to battle the elements for two or three days just to reach the world’s most southernmost region via the infamous Drake Passage.

But once you have reached the most remote continent on Earth, with its 14 million square kilometres of land mass, you are treated to a once-in-a lifetime experience amid towering icebergs, millions of penguins and thousands of whales. And that’s just fore starters.

The best time to visit is between November and March when the the sun arrives to lift temperatures above freezing point and the ice melts to allow ships to access. It’s also the perfect time to see gargantuan icebergs penguin chicks, seal pups, whales and breeding elephant seals.

Antarctica is different from anything on the planet. A huge cold-water current encloses this isolated continent. Here, in the midst of the great white open, you will find nature at its most sublime and haunting.

Travelling to Antarctica is ideal for those who are serious about adventure, exploration and discovery, but it is essential you do your homework to get the best our of your experience.

Cruise options have changed a great deal in recent years, with the larger cruise ships of operators like Silversea and Celebrity Cruises bringing a touch of luxury. The bigger ships are also more advisable for those prone to sea sickness.

But the growth in expedition cruising has spilled over to the White Continent with smaller vessels such as purpose-built 200-guest Crystal Endeavour  leading the way when she arrives in 2020 or Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot the following year.
