Costa Smeralda, at 185,000 tons, became the biggest cruise ship ever to fly the Italian flag when she arrived in December, 2019. She was also the first to operate on liquefied natural gas.

All Costa ships fly the Italian flag, and each has its own distinctive characteristics and unique style.

Together each year they offer the chance to visit some 250 separate destinations in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean, South America, the United Arab Emirates, the Far East and the Indian Ocean.

The company – now part of the Carnival group of cruise lines – began operations in the1860s when its first ship was used to transport olive oil from the family-owned refinery in Genoa – still the home of Costa Cruises – to South America.

All of the ships in the Costa fleet have been assigned RINA’s Green Star notation certifying that they are operated in compliance with the highest environmental protection standards.
